Every year during fall and winter, the Yucatán Peninsula becomes a natural refuge for thousands of migratory birds traveling from Canada and the United States in search of warmer temperatures and abundant ecosystems. Destinations like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal, and Cancún provide the perfect environment: calm beaches, lively mangroves, coastal lagoons, and tropical jungle that offer both shelter and food.
As winter sets in across the northern regions, large areas of Canada freeze and food becomes scarce. Migratory birds follow ancient routes south, and the Yucatán Peninsula plays a key role thanks to its stable climate, rich marine life, and variety of habitats found within a relatively small area.
Here, birds find everything they need to survive the season: fish-rich waters, insects, protected resting areas, and safe feeding grounds before making the long journey back north.
Some migratory birds you can see in the Riviera Maya:
They can often be seen resting along the beach, flying over the Caribbean Sea at sunrise, or exploring mangroves and coastal lagoons throughout the day.

OUR FAVORITE MIGRATORY BIRD…
Without a doubt, one of the most impressive is the American white pelican, one of the most elegant migratory birds arriving from the Canadian prairies, especially from provinces like Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Its large size, bright white feathers, and graceful flight make it impossible to miss. Watching them glide over the Caribbean Sea is one of those simple moments that make a visit to this region truly special.

A natural spectacle that repeats every year
The migratory bird season mainly runs from October to March, offering a great opportunity to enjoy nature and understand why the Riviera Maya is so special, not only for those who visit, but also for those who return… even with wings.
